Eczema
Board Certified Dermatologist, Babar K. Rao, can
treat your Eczema successfully at his Manhattan, New York, Atlantic
Highlands,
New Jersey, or Fresno, California office.
Eczema is an uncomfortable rough red oozy rash that comes in patches. The
fluid eventually dries up to form a scab. Because the area is itchy, it
often gets scratched and may become infected.
How is eczema treated
by a dermatologist?
Emollients: These reduce water loss from the skin, preventing the
dryness normally associated with eczema. Emollients are safe to use as
often as is necessary and are available in various forms — for example,
ointments for very dry skin, creams and lotions for mild to moderate or
‘wet’ eczema and gels for eczema under hair. Some are applied directly to
the skin and others are used as soap substitutes or added to the bath.
Topical steroids: Steroid cream may be necessary when the skin
becomes inflamed. Steroids reduce inflammation and are used in most types
of eczema. There are four different strengths (mild, moderately potent,
potent and very potent) and Board Certified Dermatologist, Babar K. Roa,
MD, FAAD will choice of cream will depend on your age, the severity of
your condition and the size of the area and part of the body to be
treated. You should apply the cream as directed by the dermatologist — it
is important to use only the steroid cream prescribed for you and not to
lend or borrow creams. As long as steroids are used appropriately and as
directed and monitored by your doctor, the risk of side-effects is very
rare.
Oral steroids: These are sometimes prescribed by a dermatologist in severe cases when
topical steroids have been ineffective. There may be side-effects and your
doctor will monitor your condition closely if they are prescribed.
Other treatments: Board Certified Dermatologst, Babar K. Rao, MD,
FAAD will discuss the plausibility of antihistamines to reduce
inflammation, wet wrap bandaging to soothe dry itchy skin or ultra-violet
light treatment and stronger medication for very severe eczema.
