Collagen Treatments

We all develop wrinkles with age. Patients often ask
their dermatologist how they can prevent or reverse skin aging, wrinkles, and other signs that
betray the years. Among the many ways to make the skin look younger and
smooth away wrinkles, collagen injections have been very effective.
The way your skin looks is directly related to the way your skin is
supported. Aging, disease and injury are some of the factors that weaken
the collagen fibers that give your skin its underlying strength.
Collagen, which contains local anesthesia, is injected with a tiny needle
into the skin depressions being treated. Several injections may be needed,
depending on the length and depth of the wrinkle. The procedure for both
injections and implants takes less than an hour. Implantation procedures
for the lips and nasolabial areas are done with a local anesthetic. A tiny
incision is placed at either end of the site. Then the implant is inserted
and positioned. Incisions are closed with a suture.
Who is a candidate for collagen treatments?
- If you have wrinkles on your face or around your lips that you wish to
diminish.
- If you desire to have fuller or more defined lips.
- If you have deep nasolabial folds (the line between the nose and the
corner of your mouth).
- If you have scars on your face that you wish to improve.
Intended result of collagen treatments:
- Collagen can smooth out, fill in and decrease wrinkles.
- Collagen will plump lips and define the edges of the lips.
- Collagen can fill in and reduce the depth of the nasolabial fold.
- Collagen will fill depressed acne scars.
Benefits of Collagen Treatments:
- Safe, time-tested, effective treatment that provides immediate results.
- No downtime for injectables—patients can immediately resume work and all
normal activities.
Injectable collagen was developed for use in the treatment of certain
types of wrinkles and minor skin depressions.
The material can be used to fill acne and other scars on the face and to
fill aging wrinkles on the forehead, cheeks and lips.
Several separate treatments by your dermatologist are usually necessary to fill the defect.
Touch-up injections are required at 3- to 24-month intervals, as the
injected collagen slowly is absorbed. Several strengths and types of
collagen are now available.
Collagen is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as "safe and
effective." In a small number of patients, an allergic reaction may occur
even if the skin test is negative. If this occurs, it will take a number
of months for the reaction to subside. Board Certified Dermatologist,
Babar K. Rao, can give you more detailed
information about the product and discuss with you the safety and efficacy
of this procedure.
