Anti-Aging Treatments
What
happens to the skin as we age?
With time the thickness of the skin declines. Vessels within the skin may
become more visible, and skin becomes less elastic. Repeated sun exposure
damages skin further, resulting in wrinkles, rough skin, and pigmented
skin.
What behaviors can I modify to slow the onset of aged skin?
Avoiding the sun during the midday, wearing opaque clothing, and wearing
sunscreen with a high sun-protection factor (SPF) will help prevent skin
damage as described above.
What medicines are available for the aging face?
Tretinoin is an FDA approved treatment for wrinkled and pigmented skin.
Other derivatives of vitamin A, such as tazarotene and adapalene, are
topically applied medicines that may also be effective for the same
purpose.
Creams containing alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic and lactic acids,
are another class of medicines available to reverse the effects of aging
on the skin. Other anti-oxidant compounds including vitamin C, vitamin E,
and alpha-lipoic acid, may protect skin from the harmful effects of sun
light.
Are there any other procedures available to reverse the effects of
